What a variety of recipes made, and as a result, we had students running Cafe's for selected clients, teachers and parents in to enjoy the work of their children.  A variety of recipe books were also produced with comments by the students on success and changes.

Foods of the Future

Foods of the future  
Our lifestyles and tastes change due to technology, interests, income, etc. Because of these changes our food choices have changed.   

Scenario 1  Become a Chef.
Wellington is becoming known as the café central. People in Wellington like to eat out with so many new and different café’s are available. Your design challenge is to design new foods and ways of presenting foods while discovering the skills behind running a café.


Scenario 2 Foods in half the time.
We all have microwaves, but don’t use them to the best advantage. Become a scientist and Design a series of new recipes and tips to be used in a promotional film on how to use a microwave.


Scenario 3  Foods from around the world.  (An intrepid journey through food)
Food has a language of its own, it creates a setting and gives us an insight into other cultures.  You are to Design new foods and methods of presentation that will create a message about your cultural heritage.


Scenario 4  Traditions and Celebrations

Special occasions give lasting memories, they can be associated with food or an item such as the jeep.  Become a party planner/events co-ordinator and Design and Create a new item or food for a new tradition or celebration.

What's for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner?

Problem
You are stranded on an island.  You have limited food supplies saved from your boat that needs to last for a number of days until you can find or produce your own food.

Challenge
Develop a ration pack from your available food supplies to last 2 days and meet your nutritional needs.

Action
Investigate what is in an army ration pack, 24 hour bush survival kit.

You may find it helpful to look on You Tube at clips from different survival experts.

Determine what foods provided could be used in a ration pack.

So What?
Make your own ration pack.

Determine some meals that you can produce from your ration pack.

Make at least 2 meals

Plastic Fantastic

Problem
You have found yourself on Survival Island with limited supplies and need a multi-purpose tool that you can use.

Challenge
You are to develop a model of a multi-purpose food utensil that can be used for different tasks on the Island. For example, food preparation, hunting etc.

You will design and create a model of the multi-purpose food utensil on the 3D printer and demonstrate its use in 2 situations.

Action 
Investigate what multi-purpose tools are available today and identify their uses.

So What?
What design, will my multi-purpose tool have?

What is possible to develop using the 3D printer?

What multi-purpose tools have been developed that are still used today?

What multi-pupose tool would be most useful on survival island?


Natural Supermarket

Problem
You are stranded on Survival Island, which has a lack of suitable soil to grow food on.

Challenge
Identify the steps in the process in growing plants hydroponically and trail the process by growing lettuces or a herb.

Action
Consider the range on display and taste the foods.

So What?
You are to investigate the range of possibilities for growing food using water only.

What foods grow best in water only.

Does only using water affect the taste and appearance.

Keep a photographic diary with comments of your steps in the process of growing your food items.

Investigate some ways of using your food and prepare some dishes.

Investigate the nutritional value and uses of this food.

Raw Vs Cooked

Problem
You are stranded on an island and the island has many fish, animals and plants that appear to be edible.

How are you going to serve these foods?
Raw or Cooked?

Challenge
Prepare 2 meals demonstrating how to prepare and cook food.

Action

So What?
What is the range of methods used for cooking and preparing food?

How are you going to do this because there is limited fuel for a fire for any length of time and you need some to keep for a signal fire?
